Contrary to this time last year, Thai jackfruit prices are now 6-7 times higher than in the same period. This is the highest price increase in the last four years.

According to a recent survey, the prices of Thai jackfruit in many provinces in the Mekong Delta such as An Giang, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Tien Giang, and Dong Nai have increased sharply.

The prices of Thai jackfruit have increased sharply.

Specifically, farms in Tien Giang offer a minimum price of 45,000 VND/kg for type 1, 34,000 VND/kg for type 2, 34,000 VND/kg for jackfruit more than 9 kg, and 24,000 VND/kg for jackfruit about 7 kg, etc.

Also in Tien Giang, traders go to farms to cut and buy jackfruit at the price of 42,000 VND/kg for type 1, 32,000 VND/kg for type 2, 32,000 VND/kg for jackfruit more than 9 kg, and 22,000 VND/kg for jackfruit around 7 kg, etc.

In other localities such as Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Hau Giang, An Giang, and Can Tho, the prices of Thai jackfruit increased by 2,000 VND/kg.

In particular, in the above-mentioned localities, purchasing points buy jackfruit type 1 at 43,000 VND/kg, type 2 from 33,000 VND/kg, jackfruit more than 9 kg at 33,000 VND/kg, and jackfruit around 7 kg at 23,000 VND/kg, etc.

At the garden, traders buy jackfruit type 1 at 41,000 VND/kg, type 2 at 31,000 VND/kg, jackfruit more than 9 kg at 31,000 VND/kg, and jackfruit around 7 kg at 21,000 VND/kg, etc.

According to a local trader, they buy several dozen tons of Thai jackfruit a day, but it is not enough to supply exporters.

Along with the increased demand, according to owners of farms, the prices of Thai jackfruit increased rapidly due to low supply. Especially after 4 years of the Covid-19 pandemic, due to the lack of output, the price of jackfruit is only a few thousand VND/kg, and many farms have narrowed the area. So up to now, the output of jackfruit to the market is 20-30%.lower than that of every year.

In addition, because some crops have high selling prices, some areas specializing in jackfruit such as Tien Giang have now partially converted to durian.

On the other hand, the price of jackfruit increased due to seasonality. According to some farms and traders in these provinces, Thai jackfruit prices are gradually stabilizing and may continue to increase in the next few days.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang, An Giang, and Dong Nai, the current average price of jackfruit is 32,000 – 39,000 VND/kg. The reason for the sharp increase in prices is high export demand, especially since the Chinese market reopened.

Based on the statistics of the agricultural sector of An Giang province, this locality has 714 ha of jackfruit cultivation in 2023 with a yield of about 20 tons/ha. In Vinh Long province, the area of Thai jackfruit cultivation is more than 550 ha and is increasing rapidly. Similarly, in Dong Thap, the current area of Thai jackfruit cultivation is over 4,000ha. Dong Thap has basically completed making jackfruit growing area codes for the whole province and will soon make the code for the inland growing area.

Thai jackfruit has a very large consumption market in China’s inner cities. Jackfruit exported to China is divided into three types: Jackfruit type 1 (from 9 kg), type 2 (from 6 to 8 kg), and type 3 (less than 5 kg).

Currently, to export jackfruit to the Chinese market, a growing area code and packaging facility code are required. When packing jackfruit for export, it is necessary to comply with the regulations on the packaging of goods, and at the same time, we need to specify the growing area code and packaging facility code on the packaging./.
