According to data from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s longan exports earned more than 14 million USD last year, an increase of nearly 2.5 times compared to 2022.
This is the fruit with the second-largest export growth in 2023, after durian. In particular, China, Australia, Thailand, and Japan are the countries that “favor” Vietnam’s longan the most.
Ido longan – a variety of Thai longan.
Regarding the Thai market, Central Retail Group, this country’s retail giant, boosted Vietnam’s longan exports to Thailand last year. Mr. Paul Le, Vice President of Central Retail in Vietnam, said that Thai consumers are fond of Vietnam’s longan. The volume of longan exported by this group to Thailand in 2023 increased by about 40% compared to 2022.
In 2023, Vietnam’s longan export prices were stable. Now, the price of the Ido longan – a variety of longan from Thailand – purchased by traders ranges from 16,000-18,000 VND/kg. At this price, farmers can make a profit of 8-15 million VND per 1,000 m2.
Assessing the potential of longan in the coming time, the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association said that China is the largest consumer of Vietnam’s longan and the demand of the world’s second-largest economy is very large. Therefore, if we take advantage of and increase export standards, Vietnam’s longan will increasingly narrow the gap with Thai longan in this billion population market.
Currently, longan is in the top 5 fruit with the largest area in Vietnam with more than 80,000 ha and an average output of about 600,000 tons a year./.
