When exporting officially to China, Vietnam’s coconuts can surpass the billion USD mark in the coming time, opening up many opportunities for businesses and farmers.

Vietnam and China have agreed on the early completion of procedures to sign the Protocol on phytosanitary requirements for Vietnam’s fresh coconuts exported to China. This is good news for the Vietnamese coconut industry when the market with more than 1.4 billion people is opened.

Vietnam’s coconuts are about to be officially exported to China.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that China is one of the major coconut consumption markets in the world. The official export to China will open up great opportunities for the Vietnamese coconut industry. Because this is a market with a very close geographical distance, Vietnamese fresh coconut can compete with other countries’ products.

China is a very potential market because it uses up to 2.6 billion fresh coconuts and 1.5 billion coconuts for processing each year. However, China’s domestic production only meets 10% of the demand for consumption and processing, so the rest must be imported from many other countries.

Vietnam now ranks seventh in terms of coconut production in the world. With the advantage of geographical distance, Vietnam’s coconut exports can make a breakthrough if this potential market is opened.

Currently, some partners from China have started to visit factories and check the products of Vietnamese enterprises.

Vietnam has nearly 200,000 hectares of coconut area, with an output of about two million tons. Coconuts are grown mainly in the central coastal provinces and the Mekong Delta. Up to now, Vietnam’s coconuts have been exported to 90 countries and territories. Among them are large markets such as Europe, the US, Japan, or Korea.
