According to data from the Customs Department, in May 2025, Vietnam exported 387,300 tons of cassava and cassava products, worth 116.2 million USD. This is the fourth consecutive month of significant production increase compared to the same period last year.

In the first five months of the year, cassava exports reached nearly 2 million tons, worth 601.8 million USD, an increase of 59.7% in volume and 7% in value compared to the same period in 2024. However, the average export price was only 302.5 USD/ton, a decrease of 33%. This figure reflects the downward price pressure in the global market.

Vietnam’s cassava exports grew impressively in May.

With the above results, Vietnam is the second-largest cassava supplier in the world. China remains the largest consumer market, with 1.89 million tons, worth 561.85 million USD in 5 months. This is an increase of 66.5% in volume and 10.5% in value. In May alone, purchases from China increased by 341%, with the turnover rising by 181%, raising their market share to 95.2%, compared to 91% in the same period last year.

Next are South Korea and Taiwan (China), but they account for a low proportion.

Vietnam currently has over 40 provinces and cities cultivating cassava, with an area of 520,000-550,000 hectares, a yield of 19-20 tons/ha, and a production of over 10 million tons.

The country has about 140 cassava starch processing factories, with a total designed capacity of 13.4 million tons of fresh cassava and an actual total capacity of 9.3 million tons per year.

To support the cassava industry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has approved a sustainable development plan until 2030, with the goals of achieving a production volume of 11.5-12.5 million tons, 40-50% of the area using certified seeds, 50% sustainable farming practices, and an export turnover of 1.8-2 billion USD.

The cassava industry is expected to develop sustainably until 2025, with 70-80% of cassava areas applying sustainable farming practices, fresh cassava used for deep processing of certain products accounting for over 90%, and export turnover about 2.3-2.5 billion USD.

The cassava industry has a lot of potential but needs to improve the quality of raw materials and diversify the market to develop sustainably. At the same time, the industry has to promote the application of circular processing technology, utilizing all by-products to enhance economic efficiency and protect the environment.
