Vietnam’s agriculture, forestry, and fishery sector has achieved many positive results in 2024. Notably, the export hit a record of over 62 billion USD, a growth of 3.2% compared to last year. Among them, tea products have shown stable growth.

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s tea exports in November 2024 were 12.65 thousand tons, worth 22.69 million USD, an increase of 2.6% in volume and 2.2% in value compared to November 2023.

In 11 months of 2024, Vietnam’s tea exports reached 132,985 thousand tons, worth 234,685 million USD, an increase of 25.4% in volume and 26.9% in value compared to the same period in 2023. The average export price of tea in 11 months of 2024 was 1,765 USD/ton, up 1.3% compared to the same period in 2023. Tea exports to major markets all increased compared to the same period in 2023.

Vietnam ranks fifth in terms of tea exports in the world.

Pakistan remained the largest export market for Vietnamese tea, accounting for 35.1% of the total volume and 35.3% of the total tea export value of the country. Pakistan has spent over 97 million USD to import 46.6 thousand tons of tea from Vietnam in 11 months of 2024.

Taiwan (China) ranked second, accounting for nearly 10.3% of the total volume and 12.5% of the total tea export value, reaching 13.7 thousand tons, equivalent to 23.6 million USD.

China was the most notable market. The East Asian market has maintained its third position in 2024 and has production closely following the Taiwanese market, reaching 12.2 thousand tons, equivalent to 17.4 million USD. This was an increase of 177% in volume and 85.2% in value.

The proportion of tea exports to China accounts for 9.2% of the total volume and 4.2% of the total tea export value of Vietnam. The average export price in 11 months to China only reached 1,420 USD/ton, a decrease of 33.2% compared to the same period last year.

Data from Chinese Customs shows that Vietnam is the largest tea supplier to this country in 2024, with an import increase from Vietnam reaching as high as 460%. China has long held the No. 1 position in tea production and supply for decades and has a cultivation area 14 times larger than that of Vietnam.

According to the report from the Crop Production Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), in 2023, Vietnam’s tea exports reached approximately 121,000 tons, worth 211 million USD, a decrease of 16.9% in volume and 10.9% in value compared to 2022. The demand for tea imports in major global markets is showing signs of recovery, which is a positive signal for the Vietnamese tea industry to increase exports.

With an average annual export volume of about 126.8 thousand tons, Vietnamese tea products have been exported to 74 countries and territories. Vietnam has become the fifth-largest tea producer and exporter in the world. The total area of tea nationwide is now about 122,000 hectares. The main tea-growing regions are Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Lam Dong, Nghe An, Yen Bai, and Ha Giang.

Currently, Vietnam has processed about 15 different types of tea. Black tea and green tea are the two key products, accounting for the largest proportion in exports.

It is forecast that Vietnam’s tea export volume will reach 136,500 tons by 2030, with an average annual increase of 0.82%, accounting for about 80% of the total tea production.
