According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, cassava and cassava product exports in March 2025 reached over 487,000 tons, worth over 139 million USD. This is an increase of 13.8% in volume and 3.5% in value compared to the same period in 2024.
In the first quarter of 2025, cassava and cassava product exports were 1.2 million tons, with a turnover of 379.7 million USD. The result is an increase of 29.7% in volume but a decrease of 11.6% in value compared to the same period in 2024.
The average export price of cassava and cassava products has decreased sharply. In the first three months of 2025, the average export price was 307.8 USD/ton, a decrease of 32.4% compared to the same period in 2024.
In terms of the market, cassava and cassava products from Vietnam are mainly exported to China. In the first quarter, Vietnam exported more than 1.1 million tons of cassava to China with a value of over 349 million USD. This is a significant increase of 30% in volume but a decrease of 13% in value compared to the same period last year. The average export price reached 301 USD/ton, a decrease of 33%.
Vietnam is the second-largest cassava exporter in the world.
According to the Vietnam Cassava Association, due to low consumption demand, the inventory at Chinese ports has increased, and consumption has slowed down. Meanwhile, the supply in Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos is high, making it easy for China to buy cassava at low prices. Following closely are Taiwan (China) and Malaysia.
Among the markets, Japan is the export market that has the strongest growth. Specifically, exports to Japan in the first three months of 2025 were 2,283 tons, worth 832 thousand USD. This is a significant increase of 467% in volume and 337% in value compared to the same period in 2024. The average export price in the first three months of the year was 365 USD/ton, a decrease of 22.8% compared to the same period last year.
Currently, Vietnam is the second-largest cassava exporter in the world after Thailand. In the past five years, the country has achieved an export turnover of over one billion USD.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country now has about 140 cassava starch processing factories, with a total designed capacity of 13.4 million tons of fresh cassava and an actual total capacity of 9.3 million tons per year.
To support the cassava industry, in 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development approved the project “Sustainable development of the cassava industry by 2030, with a vision to 2050.” The goal by 2030 is that the country’s fresh cassava production can reach about 11.5-12.5 million tons.
In addition, to compete with Thailand, the Import-Export Department recommends that Vietnamese enterprises improve product quality to maintain and expand their market share in the global market.
