According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in 7 months of 2025, Vietnam exported 16,084 tons of ginger, turmeric, and other spices, with a total export value of 42.8 million USD. Compared to the same period last year, export volume has decreased by 17.5%, but export value has increased by 12.8%.

Ginger is being chosen by many localities in their sustainable agricultural development strategies. This plant is easy to grow with few pests and diseases, requiring little chemical fertilizer and suitable for crop rotation. In addition to its economic benefits, ginger also contributes to soil improvement, erosion control, and increasing green cover.
Vietnam has earned nearly 43 million USD from turmeric and ginger exports.
This is also a drought-tolerant plant that can grow in various soil types. Post-processing byproducts such as ginger fibers and pulp can be utilized as fertilizer, animal feed, or raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry.
Organizing raw material zones linked to cooperatives and businesses is helping farmers stabilize their output while creating jobs for many rural workers. According to experts, ginger not only brings economic benefits but is also part of building an ecological, circular agriculture that adapts to climate change.
Regarding turmeric, although it is common in Vietnam, it is a rare spice in the world. Vietnam is one of the countries with the largest turmeric cultivation area, with over 50,000 hectares (by 2021), mainly in the Central Highlands and Central Coast provinces. Turmeric starch is popular in many markets.
Vietnamese turmeric starch has a nice color, pleasant aroma, and full curcumin, which is an active compound with many health and beauty benefits. Vietnam’s advantage for spice products is lower production and labor costs compared to developed countries. Furthermore, a large planting area and optimized production costs make the prices highly competitive compared to other suppliers. The price of Vietnamese turmeric starch ranges from 2,000 to 2,500 USD per ton, while the export price of Indian turmeric starch is 3,000 to 3,500 USD per ton.
Vietnam now ranks third in the world for spice supply and processing, after India and China. The entire Vietnamese spice industry has 14 factories with deep processing technology. Previously, Vietnam exported 29,544 tons of ginger, turmeric, and other spices in 2024, with a total export value of 59.5 million USD. Compared to 2023, export volume decreased by 15.5%, but value increased significantly by 20.7%.
