Black Cardamom with the scientific name Amomum subulatum, belongs to the family of Ginger. In Vietnam, people often call it Sa Nhan Coc or Do Ho.
The origin of this plant is from the eastern Himalayas, especially in countries such as Bhutan, Nepal,… and even Central China. In Vietnam, Black Cardamom appears mainly in the northern mountainous areas, especially Ha Giang and Hoang Lien Son mountain ranges.
The Black Cardamom plant can grow at a height of about 3 meters, its root stems in the shape of ginger, short leaf stalks, or some plants without leaf stalks. The blade is tapered and elliptical.
The Black Cardamom flower usually grows in clumps and is orange-red. The fruit is tapered, red-brown, about 2 cm large and has many stripes on its skin. When eaten, it tastes sweet, slightly bitter, and especially smells quite strong.
