The selling price of green onions at markets is doubling compared to the previous month, and even more expensive than industrial chicken at convenience stores.

Ms. Loan, at Binh Thanh district, said that this week it was difficult to ask for free green onion at the market because of the high price. “Usually when I buy vegetables, sellers give me free green onions. But for a few days, I had to buy for 10,000 VND but only got a few branches, ” Ms. Loan said.

The owner of the noodle shop on Le Duc Tho Street (Go Vap) said that the price of green onion is more expensive than chives. One month ago, the price was only 20,000-30,000 VND per kg, now the wholesale price is 50,000-60,000 VND.

At traditional markets, one kilogram of green onion being sold is twice as high as it was one month ago. In convenience stores, the price is up to 100,000 VND/kg. This is more expensive than a kilogram of industrial chicken or pork butt.

According to people in the green onion growing areas of Dong Thap, Long An, and Tay Ninh, green onion is being sold at a price of 20,000 -26,000 VND/kg. With this price, on average, each 1,000 m2 of green onion brings an income of over 10 million VND (after deducting all costs).

Mr. Hoang Hai, the owner of a vegetable cooperative in Tay Ninh, said that the sharp increase in green onion prices was due to prolonged rain. Green onions often became rotten and the production decreased by 30-40%. Besides, in the rainy season, green onions easily get diseases, so people reduce cultivation compared to the dry season.

A representative of Thu Duc wholesale market said that the source of spices and vegetables to the market decreased slightly compared to before. Not only green onions but cilantro and other herbs are also on the rise compared to a month ago./.
