According to the SPS Office of Vietnam, enterprises exporting chili to the Taiwan market should pay special attention to the new regulations of this market related to the provision of test reports on Sudan dyes.

The SPS Office of Vietnam has just received a notice from the Food and Drug Administration (TFDA), and the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan (China) announcing the application of new regulations for goods used as food.

Taiwan has new regulations on chili import.

According to the announcement of the TFDA, Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan (China), Sudan dyes detected in many batches of imported chili powder at the border or point of sale inspection from 2023 to 2024 originated from China, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam. Therefore, the TFDA proposed import inspection requirements for products with CCC code 0904.22.00.00-1 (Capsicum or Pimenta fruits, crushed or ground) and 20904.21.90.00-3 (other Capsicum or Pimenta fruits in dry, uncrushed) to provide test reports on Sudan dyes.

The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) said that, by the end of March 2024, Vietnam exported 3,141 tons of chili with a total export turnover of 8.1 million USD. Compared to the same period in 2023, exports increased by 17.6% and turnover increased by 52.8%. China and Laos are the two main export markets with 2,753 tons and 259 tons, accounting for 95.9% of total exports.

Since the end of February 2024, the Taiwanese (China) market has restricted the chili import of dozens of enterprises from China, Thailand, Mexico, and Vietnam. In March 2024, Taiwan (China) continued to strengthen its supervision of imported chili and chili products.

Sudan is an industrial dye for red dyeing plastics and other synthetic substances. Sudan dyes are often used to make food an attractive red, as well as to keep food coloring longer. It is commonly found in chili powder and curry powder./.
