According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Vietnam is among the top 10 largest passion fruit-producing and -exporting countries in the world. Notably, about 70-80% of fresh and processed passion fruit production is exported to over 20 countries and territories.

In 2024, Vietnam’s passion fruit export value reached 172 million USD. In the first five months of this year, exports of passion fruit products brought in 89.5 million USD, an increase of 14.5% compared to the same period last year.

Experts said that passion fruit is expected to soon join the billion-dollar export group. Currently, Vietnam’s purple passion fruit is being welcomed thanks to its difference from the yellow passion fruit of South America.

China has been massively buying passion fruit from Vietnam.

Passion fruit belongs to the species Passiflora edulis, family Passifloraceae. This is a nutritious fruit, rich in antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, and fiber. Although passion fruit is not a native plant, it is very well-suited to Vietnam’s climate. Passion fruit was first introduced to Vietnam during the French colonial period. Before 2015, this crop was primarily concentrated in the provinces of Lam Dong and Dak Nong (now Lam Dong province).

To date, the area of passion fruit in Vietnam is over 12,000 hectares, with an annual production of about 200,000 tons, concentrated in the Northern mountainous region and the Central Highlands. It is among the 18 fruits in Vietnam with an annual production exceeding 100,000 tons. There are three passion fruit harvests per year in Vietnam.

Vietnam has become one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of passion fruit, ranking among the top 10 supplying countries. Compared to some of the world’s largest passion fruit producers, Vietnam can produce it year-round. The Central Highlands accounts for over 90% of the country’s passion fruit cultivation area.

Since July 2022, Vietnamese passion fruit has been officially exported to the Chinese market, opening up significant opportunities for production expansion. By April 2025, Vietnam had signed a phytosanitary protocol with China, officially opening the door for official passion fruit exports.

Additionally, it is expected that this year, Vietnam’s passion fruit will be exported to the United States.

In recent years, Vietnam has focused on improving quality, producing in chains, and ensuring the traceability of passion fruit.

Since the global market is in high demand, 80% of Vietnam’s fresh and processed passion fruit production has been exported.

According to the Customs Department, over the past 5 years, Vietnam’s passion fruit export volume and value have increased by over 300%, consistently ranking among the top 10 fruits with high export value.

Suitable soil has helped passion fruit grown in Vietnam achieve world-class quality and be exported to demanding markets such as Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, Germany, and South Korea.

Besides fresh passion fruit, products like juice and syrup are also exported to many markets around the world, contributing to stable and sustainable income for farmers.
