The export turnover of wood and wood products in 10 months of 2023 reached 10.8 billion USD, which was down 19.9% over the same period in 2022. It is estimated that the export of wood and wood products in 2023 will only achieve more than 14 billion USD, nearly 3 billion USD lower than the target of 17 billion USD set at the beginning of the year…

It is difficult for exports of wood and wood products in 2023 to achieve the target.

According to data reported by the Vietnam Wood and Forest Products Association, in October 2023, wood and forest product exports reached 1.28 billion USD, down 0.2% compared to October 2022. In particular, the export turnover of wood and wood products reached 1.2 billion USD, up 5.7% compared to September 2023, but down 0.9% compared to October 2022; The remaining 0.08 billion USD came from non-wood forest products.

EXPORTS OF WOOD PRODUCTS ARE STILL DECLINING

In the wood industry, the export of wood chips and pellets in October 2023 brought 410 million USD, a slight decrease compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, export turnover of wooden products reached 790 million USD, up 4% compared to September 2023 and 0.3% compared to October 2022.

Accumulated in 10 months of 2023, the total export turnover of wood and forest products reached 11.65 billion USD, down 19.3% over the same period last year. In particular, the export of non-wood forest products brought 0.85 billion USD and wood products 10.8 billion USD, down 19.9% over the same period in 2022.

The export turnover of wood and wood products in recent months has grown positively.

According to the Timber and Forest Products Association, there was a decrease in demand due to the impact of inflation and tight monetary policy in many major wood consumption markets. It caused the export turnover of the wood industry to continuously decline since the beginning of 2023.

However, for now, many enterprises in the wood industry have orders for the year-end shopping season of the world market. The export turnover of many wood and wood products has increased sharply again in September and October 2023, contributing to narrowing the decrease in 10 months of 2023.

Specifically, the export turnover of wooden frame chairs in September 2023 increased by 19.6% compared to the same period last year; in October 2023, it increased by 21% compared to October 2022. Exports of wood, boards, and flooring reached 148 million USD in September 2023, up 38.2% compared to September 2022; and 152 million USD in October 2023, up 37% compared to October 2022. Especially, the export of wood chips in October 2023 increased by 30% compared to October 2022.

The export turnover of wood and wood products in recent months has grown positively. But due to a deep decrease in export turnover in the first half of the year, it is difficult to achieve the target set at the beginning of the year.

In 2022, wood and forest product exports reached a record of nearly 17 billion USD, so in early 2023, the Government set a target for the whole industry: wood and forest product exports of over 17 billion USD, of which wood and wood products of 16 billion USD. However, with the results of 10 months of 2023, the Vietnam Timber and Forest Products Association estimates that the export turnover of wood and forest products in 2023 will only reach 15 billion USD, of which wood and wood products will reach about 13.6 to 14 billion USD./.
