STRONG GROWTH IN THE USA AND EU

While most of Vietnam’s fresh fruits and vegetables are destined for the Chinese market, the group of processed fruits and vegetables is growing rapidly in distant markets, especially the EU and the US.

This is easy to explain, because fresh fruits and vegetables are perishable items, and the storage period is very short, so they are only suitable for consumption in near markets.

Regarding the EU and the US, fresh vegetables and fruits are difficult to pass the journey on sea lasting a month. If they are transported by plane, the freight is too high. Meanwhile, canned fruits and juice have a shelf life of 1-2 years, helping to overcome long-term transportation.

“Among processed vegetables and fruits, passion fruit products rank first place in terms of value and they also have a very strong growth rate in 2022 with an increase of up to 78%, reaching 135 million USD. This is followed by coconut products (122 million USD), fruits of all kinds (100 million USD), pistachios (90 million USD), and pineapples (53 million USD).”

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

According to the US International Trade Commission, US imports of processed vegetables and fruits in 2022 were about 11 billion USD, of which 280 million USD from Vietnam. In the past three years, the export value of Vietnam’s processed vegetables and fruits to the US has grown strongly, with an increase of 30-45% per year.

Among processed vegetables and fruits, passion fruit products rank first place in terms of value.

The high growth rate of processed vegetables and fruits imported from Vietnam shows that these products are gradually meeting the requirements of US consumers. However, processed vegetables and fruits from Vietnam in the total imports of the US only account for a very low proportion. This is a great opportunity for enterprises to increase the export of processed vegetables and fruits to the US market.

For the European market, Mr. Tran Van Cong – Vietnam Agricultural Counselor in Europe said: In recent years, Vietnamese fruit and vegetable enterprises with a large scale and modern production technology have done well in processing products to enter the European market. In the group of processed products exported to the EU, canned juice and frozen juice account for a large proportion.

According to the European Statistical Office (Eurostat), the Netherlands‘s imports of processed vegetables and fruits in the first 9 months of 2022 reached 2.2 million tonnes, worth 2.7 billion Eur (equivalent to 2.9 billion USD). This figure is up 10.8% in volume and 20.8% in value over the same period in 2021.

The Netherlands sharply increased imports of processed vegetables and fruits from Vietnam in the first 9 months of 2022, reaching 11,000 tonnes, worth 40.3 million Eur (equivalent to 43.1 million USD), up 30.3% in volume and 88.8% in value over the same period in 2021. Despite the sharp increase in imports from Vietnam, the proportion of imports from Vietnam is very low, accounting for only 0.5% of the total import of processed vegetables and fruits into the Netherlands.

The Eurostat also mentioned that EU imports of processed vegetables and fruits in 2022 reached nearly 19 million tonnes, worth 26 billion Eur (equivalent to 12.5 billion USD). The world market for processed fruits and vegetables is forecast to reach about 392 billion USD by 2025.

It can be seen that in the world market of processed vegetables and fruits, Vietnam’s products account for a very small proportion. Therefore, experts in the fruit and vegetable industry said that Vietnam’s processed fruit and vegetable products have many opportunities to expand its export market share globally./.
