Cassava is one of Vietnam’s 13 key agricultural exports. It places Vietnam second globally in terms of exports. According to statistics from the Customs Department, exports of this group in 10 months of 2025 reached nearly 3.35 million tons, equivalent to nearly 1.04 billion USD. This is an increase of 60% in volume and 85% in value compared to the same period last year.
The average price was 310 USD/ton, down 32% compared to the same period in 2024.
In October alone, cassava exports reached over 260,000 tons with a value of over 88.5 million USD. This is a decrease of 3.6% in volume and 1% in value compared to September.

China suddenly buys cassava from Vietnam again.
Regarding the market, cassava and cassava products are mainly exported to China, accounting for 95% of the total volume. Specifically, in 10 months of the year, Vietnam exported over 3.1 million tons of cassava to China, worth over 962 million USD. This shows a significant increase of 64% in volume and 10% in value compared to the same period last year. The price decreased by 33%, equivalent to 304 USD per ton.
Exporters say that Vietnamese cassava starch is very popular in China, especially during the Mid-Autumn Festival and year-end holidays. In addition to Vietnam and Thailand, China also increased its purchases from Laos, Cambodia, and Brazil, while decreasing imports from Indonesia.
Taiwan (China) ranks second, with over 46,000 tons, worth 17.36 million USD. This is a 14% increase in volume but a 21.7% decrease in value compared to the same period last year. Malaysia is the third-largest market with 23,024 tons, equivalent to 8.82 million USD, an increase of 71.2% in volume and 25.5% in value.
The Vietnamese cassava industry is facing numerous environmental challenges. The widespread and unsustainable cultivation has caused severe soil depletion.
According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), the decrease in export prices is due to an increase in cassava starch inventories in China.
Additionally, cassava supply has increased again because farmers expanded their area. It put even more pressure on prices, leading to a significant drop.
Currently, the country has over 140 cassava starch processing plants with a total capacity of 9.3 million tons per year. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development aims for the export value of cassava and cassava products to reach 1.8-2 billion USD by 2030.
To achieve this goal, Vietnam needs to focus on improving product quality, diversifying export markets, and strengthening connections between enterprises and growers. The application of science and technology in production and processing is also an important factor in improving productivity and product quality.
