In the first five months of 2023, although the total export volume decreased, the exports of cassava and cassava products to markets such as Japan, Malaysia, or Taiwan still grew strongly in both volume and value compared to the same period in 2022.

Specifically, in the first five months of the year, cassava exports to Japan reached 2.39 thousand tons, earning 1.22 million USD, a spike of 1,285% in volume and an increase of 947.4% in value over the same period in 2022.

Despite impressive growth, these two markets only account for a small proportion of total exports of cassava and cassava products.

China is Vietnam’s largest consumer of cassava and cassava products.

According to Chinese Customs, Vietnam is the second-largest supplier of cassava slices to China in the first four months of 2023. The market share of  Vietnam’s cassava slices is 12.55% of China’s total cassava imports, higher than 10.71% in the first four months of 2022.

Vietnam is the second-largest supplier of cassava starch for China. The market share of Vietnam’s cassava starch in China’s total imports is 36.11%, lower than 36.15% in the first four months of 2022.

In the domestic market, the price of fresh cassava in Tay Ninh is about 1,000-1,200 VND/kg higher than in the same period last year. This year, due to prolonged hot weather, it is likely that the cassava production in crop 2023/24 in the mountainous areas of the North and North Central will decrease significantly compared to the previous year. At factories, the inventory of raw cassava is low so the selling price is high./.
