In 2023, canned tuna exports to Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy all increased, especially exports to Italy increased by 456% compared to 2022.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, in 2023, canned tuna became the most exported product group to the EU market for the first time. The export turnover of this group accounts for more than 40% of the total export turnover to this market, estimated at 71 million USD. It was an increase of 28% compared to 2022.

Canned tuna exports to Italy in 2023 increased by 456%.

Based on the statistics of the General Department of Customs, after the decline in the first month of the year, the export of canned tuna to the EU has grown continuously for many months when the preferential tariff quotas under the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA Agreement) are restarted.

Notably, there was a time when export turnover increased to 03 digits over the same period. At the end of the year, after the tariff preferential quota was used up, canned tuna exports to this market slowed down and even decreased in some months.

Vietnam’s tuna products have been exported to 22 countries in the EU. In particular, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy are the three largest importers of Vietnam’s canned tuna. In 2023, canned tuna exports to all of these countries increased, especially Italy increased by 456% compared to 2022.

Businesses said that the EU’s increase in canned tuna imports from Vietnam is due to the high average import price of canned tuna products in the EU block. As a result, EU countries tend to increase tuna imports from outside.

In addition, the El Niño phenomenon caused drought in the Panama Canal in late 2023 and this has hindered Ecuador’s tuna exports to the EU./.
