“Black gold” from Vietnam floods into the US and Germany.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in the first half of this year, Vietnam exported 124,900 tons of pepper, worth 859.6 million USD. Although the export volume decreased by 12.4%, the value increased significantly by 35.7% compared to the same period in 2024.
Especially, the average export price over the past 6 months is estimated at 6,881 USD/ton, an increase of 54.8% compared to the same period last year.
Vietnamese pepper is exported to 125 countries and territories around the world. In the first six months of this year, the United States, Germany, and India were the three largest markets, accounting for market shares of 26.8%, 9.2%, and 7.7%, respectively.
Compared to the same period in 2024, the export value of “black gold” to the US increased by 34.8%, to India by 73.7%, and to India by 86.7%.
Additionally, among the top 15 largest export markets, the value of pepper exports increased the most in the UK, with 2.1 times, and decreased the most in the Netherlands market, with a drop of 12.5%.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment forecasts that pepper exports to the US will face significant challenges in the last months of the year when the country imposes import tariffs. Vietnamese pepper will have to face competitive pressure from products of Brazil and Indonesia. The ministry also noted that to achieve the target of 1.35 billion USD in 2025, businesses need to seize every opportunity to deliver goods while avoiding congestion with contracts signed from last year. At the same time, businesses need to proactively expand their markets to countries in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, avoiding heavy dependence on the US.
According to experts, the Vietnamese pepper industry is currently transitioning towards sustainability. Mrs. Hoang Thi Lien, chairwoman of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), said that the increasing global demand for natural and organic spices presents an opportunity for Vietnam to enhance its domestic value.
