Ben Tre province has set a plan to develop 4,000 hectares of high-tech shrimp farming to promote the spearhead manufacturing industry in the area by 2025.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ben Tre, by the end of April 2022, 215/500 ha of high-tech shrimp farming have been developed in Ba Tri district (10 ha in Bao Thanh commune), Binh Dai district (105 ha in Thoi Thuan, Thanh Phuoc, Binh Thang commune), Thanh Phu district 110 ha. So far, shrimp has been released on 2,000 ha, reaching 80% of the plan by 2022, and the production of high-tech shrimp farming reached 18,000 tonnes.
Currently, Ben Tre is implementing investment projects in the technical infrastructure of high-tech shrimp farming areas to achieve the goal of developing 4,000 hectares of high-tech shrimp farming in three coastal districts by 2025 (Binh Dai district 2,000 ha, Ba Tri district 500 ha, and Thanh Phu district 1,500 ha).
High-tech shrimp farming is a growing trend due to its outstanding efficiency compared to traditional farming. Many farmers have boldly invested in this model to make big profits. However, the capital resources required for high-tech shrimp farming are quite high.
According to the traditional method, it is only necessary to rent a machine to dig two square ponds at the cost of several tens of millions of VND. However, in the case of high-tech farming, it costs tens of times more for mechanical systems and equipment.

To help businesses and farmers develop this potential profession, the Resolution of the Ben Tre Provincial Party Congress for the 2020-2025 term set the goal of making Ben Tre a province that develops strongly in the Mekong Delta area by 2025 and the whole country by 2030. The Resolution also identified six key product groups, including Coconuts, fruit trees, seedlings and ornamental flowers, pigs, cows, and shrimp. Regarding shrimp, Ben Tre aims to complete 4,000 ha of high-tech shrimp farming and a production value of one billion USD by 2025.
The Provincial People’s Committee has issued a Development Plan for 4,000 ha of high-tech brackish shrimp farming until 2025, with a total estimated investment of more than 10,705 billion VND. The state budget capital is more than 1,200 billion VND, the remaining is people’s capital and enterprise capital of 9,500 billion VND.
According to Mr. Nguyen Minh Canh, Vice Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial People’s Committee, in the coming time, the province will convert some inefficient agricultural production areas in the three districts of Ba Tri, Binh Dai, and Thanh Phu into specialized seafood areas, high-tech shrimp farming associated with processing and consumer markets.
At the same time, the implementation of infrastructure construction projects will be prioritized, especially the water supply and drainage channel system for concentrated shrimp farming areas and high-tech shrimp farming areas in three coastal districts.
