According to the VASEP’s assessment, with good growth in 2024 and the first two months of this year, Vietnam’s shellfish exports have the potential to break through in 2025.
Statistics from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Processing and Export (VASEP) show that the export of shellfish in the first two months of this year recorded positive results.
In the first two months of the year, this sector reached 41 million USD, an increase of 132% compared to the same period in 2024 (18 million USD). This reflects the increasing demand in the global market as well as Vietnam’s improving production and export capacity.
Clams remain the largest export item in the shellfish group, reaching over 14 million USD, an increase of 41% compared to 2024 (10 million USD). Vietnam’s clam products are highly competitive in the international market.
Snails and scallops occupy the next positions, with spectacular growth. Snail exports increased by 673%, from 2 million USD in the first two months of 2024 to 14 million USD in the same period this year. Meanwhile, scallops also saw a significant increase of 479%, from 2 million USD to 10 million USD.
In the first two months of 2025, clams and cockles recorded promising growth, increasing by 128% and 65%, respectively.
Contrary to the overall growth trend, some items are experiencing a decline. Oyster exports decreased by 43%, from 3 million USD to 2 million USD. Abalone decreased sharply, reaching only 623 USD, a 99% decrease compared to the same period last year (96,579 USD).
The processed products from mollusks for export are quite diverse, including frozen boiled clams, clams boiled in one shell, whole clams, frozen scallop adductor muscles, frozen clam meat, and canned clam meat, which are favored by the market.
Vietnamese shellfish are exported to traditional markets such as China, the EU, Japan, the USA, and South Korea. China has increased its imports of these products from Vietnam, especially clams and scallops. Recently, the business has been expanding its market to Eastern Europe, Northern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North America, South America, and Asia.

To sustainably develop the shellfish industry, it is necessary to provide policy support for investment and credit to organizations and individuals involved in the production, processing, and trading of shellfish; ensure price and profit stability for farmers; and establish and develop concentrated shellfish farming areas in a specialized direction, ensuring quality.
