Tea is one of Vietnam’s key agricultural products, contributing significantly to the economy and enhancing its position in the international market.
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, tea exports in January 2025 reached 9.7 thousand tons, worth 16.4 million USD. This was a decrease of 21.6% in volume and 21.5% in value compared to January 2024.
The average export price of tea in January 2025 was 1,693.7 USD/ton, an increase of 0.2% compared to January 2024. Tea exports significantly decreased in January 2025. Due to the Tet holiday in the last week of January 2025, export activities were disrupted.
Tea exports in January 2025 reached 16.4 million USD.
In January 2025, Pakistan remained the largest export market for Vietnamese tea, accounting for 35.1% of the total volume and 38.7% of the total value of tea exports nationwide. Exports to Pakistan in January 2025 were 3,400 tons, worth 6.4 million USD, a decrease of 24.8% in volume and 30.3% in value compared to January 2024.
Notably, tea exports to the Russian market recorded high growth in January 2025, reaching 632 tons, worth 1.2 million USD, an increase of 19.2% in volume and 48.5% in value. The Taiwanese market (China) ranked third, with 713 tons, worth 1.16 million USD, a decrease of 23.2% in volume and 15.3% in value.
Although Vietnam has exported tea to many countries and territories, there are many challenges to dominating large markets like the US. By 2030, Vietnam’s tea export volume is forecast to reach about 156,000 tons, accounting for about 80% of the total tea production in the country.
With the strong competition from major tea-producing countries like India, China, and Kenya, Vietnam needs to improve product quality and enhance marketing strategies to increase its market share in international markets.
The global tea market is growing strongly, expected to reach 70.19 billion USD by 2028. Factors such as lifestyle changes, increased awareness of the health benefits of drinking tea, and the rise of premium tea products are driving this growth. Vietnamese tea, with its high quality and variety of types, can take advantage of these opportunities to increase exports. Black tea and green tea will continue to be the two main export items, with special products such as clean tea, organic tea, and cold brew tea increasingly favored by consumers.
Vietnamese tea has made steady progress in the international market and is now exported to 74 countries and territories. However, to truly rise in the global tea industry, Vietnam needs to continue improving product quality, expanding consumption markets, especially in potential markets like the US, and constantly innovating in tea products to meet the increasing demands of consumers.
