Chilies are grown throughout all provinces and cities of Vietnam and are popular in markets. More than just a fruit with a typical spicy taste, chilies are considered a billion-dollar fruit when they bring in tens of millions of dollars per year.

Chili exports have brought in more than 20 million USD since the beginning of the year.

According to the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), Vietnam’s pepper exports in the first 8 months of the year reached 8,800 tons with a turnover of more than 21.2 million USD, up 6.1% in volume and 34.8% in value over the same period last year.

The key export markets are China with 7,377 tons, accounting for 83.8% but down 0.2% over the same period. Laos ranks second with 970 tons, up 48%. Next is the US with 163 tons, up 143.3%.

China has been the largest market for chili exports in recent years. Since March 2022, Vietnam’s chilies have been exported to China. Shipments of fresh chili must be checked in quarantine and clearly noted with relevant parameters in the phytosanitary certificate.

In 2023, chili exports reached a turnover of 20 million USD, equivalent to more than 10,000 tons, a sharp increase of 107% compared to 2022. Vietnam is one of the largest chili-producing countries in the world. The most famous chili-growing regions in Vietnam are the Central and Central Highlands, especially Da Lat province. Dalat’s chillies have a special taste and are favored because of their diverse colors.

Chilies are widely used in Vietnamese cuisine to create special flavors for dishes. They are also used in traditional medicine to cure intestinal diseases and strengthen the body’s resistance.
