According to the European Statistics Agency (Eurostat), in 2023, Germany imported 16.52 thousand tons of pepper from the non-EU market, worth nearly 70.4 million EUR (equivalent to 76.57 million USD). This result was down 25.1% in volume and 34% in value compared to 2022.
Vietnam is the largest non-EU supplier of pepper to Germany.
In 2023, Germany‘s average import price of pepper from the non-EU market reached 4,260 USD/ton, down 11.9% compared to 2022. In particular, the average import price of pepper from all non-EU supplies decreased. The lowest decline was 7.3% from Brazil and the highest was 20.3% from Vietnam.
The main non-EU supplies of pepper to Germany include Vietnam, Brazil, India, Indonesia, and Cambodia. Vietnam was the largest supplier last year, reaching 8.85 thousand tons, worth nearly 35.12 million EUR (equivalent to 38.2 million USD). This was down 10.2% in volume and 28.4% in value compared to 2022.
However, Vietnam’s market share of Germany’s total imports from the non-EU market still increased from 44.67% in 2022 to 53.56% in 2023. Brazil was the second-largest supplier, reaching 4.61 thousand tons, worth 16.87 million EUR (equivalent to 18.35 million USD), down 45.4% in volume and 49.4% in value compared to 2022.
Brazil’s market share of Germany’s total imports from the non-EU market fell from 38.26% in 2022 to 27.92% in 2023. Germany also reduced pepper imports from Indonesia and Cambodia, but sharply increased imports from India./.
