Nigeria is Vietnam’s third-largest cashew supplier. Since the beginning of the year, the African country has exported over 240,000 tons of cashews to Vietnam, with a value exceeding 351 million USD. Despite being one of the world’s largest pepper producers and exporters, Vietnam still imports tens of thousands of tons of cashew each year. The reason is that the price of cashews in some countries, like Cambodia, is often lower than in the domestic market due to large supply and low production costs.
For Cambodia, Vietnam’s largest cashew supplier, the country currently has about 700,000 hectares of cashew cultivation area, with Kampong Thom leading at nearly 148,000 hectares, followed by Kratie (103,000 hectares) and Ratanakiri (97,000 hectares). However, the domestic processing chain is fragmented, with about 50 businesses operating, only six of which are medium-sized facilities capable of processing 7,000 to 14,000 tons per year. Most are small household-based facilities with unstable output.
Cashews imported from Cambodia and ASEAN countries have a 0% import tax, while those imported from outside the ASEAN market have a 5% tax.
Vietnam has maintained its position as the world’s largest cashew exporter for many consecutive years. With advanced processing technology, Vietnam has achieved record exports in terms of volume and value, contributing to meeting the growing demand of the international market. In 2025, Vietnam’s cashew nut exports are expected to reach a value of 4.5 billion USD. This is an increase of 2.7% compared to 2024, thanks to a significant rise in average selling prices, which will offset a slight decline in production during the first half of the year.
