Information from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) indicates that after a decline in 2024, Vietnam’s tuna exports to Finland in 2025 have recovered, with significant growth in many months.
According to statistics, the export value of tuna to Finland has been steadily increasing, from 1.7 million USD in 2021 to nearly 4 million USD in 2023.
Vietnam’s tuna exports to Finland in the first 7 months of 2025 reached nearly 2.5 million USD, an increase of 49% compared to the same period in 2024. This shows the interest and acceptance of this market for Vietnamese tuna products. With a nearly 50% increase in the first 7 months of the year, Finland promises to be a potential market for Vietnamese tuna in the near future.
The main tuna product exported to this market is canned tuna, in addition to processed and frozen tuna products. These items from Vietnam are highly regarded for their competitive pricing compared to other traditional sources, thanks to tariff preferences under the EVFTA agreement.
Vietnam’s tuna exports to Finland have made significant progress in recent years.
The global tuna market in 2025 is being affected by fluctuations in raw material prices, logistics costs, and tighter consumer spending trends in Europe after inflation. However, processed, protein-rich, and reasonably priced seafood products like tuna still maintain their appeal.
The demand from the Nordic countries (Finland, Sweden, and Denmark) is forecast to remain stable, particularly in the retail segment. Additionally, Finland could be a gateway for Vietnamese businesses to expand into neighboring Nordic countries, following common consumer trends.
In recent times, Vietnamese businesses have made efforts to increase exports to the Finnish market. However, tuna exports to Finland still account for a small proportion of Vietnam’s total tuna export value.
This shows that there is great potential for growth, but it requires businesses to improve product quality, meet market standards and requirements, and build a reputable brand.
However, like other EU markets, Vietnam’s exports to Finland will face fierce competition from major suppliers such as Spain, Portugal, and Thailand. At the same time, increasingly strict requirements for sustainability certification (MSC, IUU certificates) will pose a significant challenge for Vietnam.
Tuna is a strategic agricultural export item for Vietnam. In the waters of Vietnam, tuna are primarily found in the seas off the central coast and the Central East Sea. Vietnam’s tuna reserves are estimated to exceed 600,000 tons.
Vietnam has become the world’s 5th largest tuna exporter by value, only behind Thailand, Ecuador, Spain, and China. Vietnam’s tuna exports in 2024 reached nearly 1 billion USD. In the first 7 months of 2025, the result was nearly 542 million USD, a decrease of 3% compared to the same period last year.
In the final months of the year, Vietnamese tuna is unlikely to break through and maintain its market share because the US has begun to impose new countervailing duties on each country. Along with this, geopolitical instability, logistics disruptions, and fluctuating demand in key markets such as Russia, Israel, and Chile are significantly impacting exports to these markets.
